I. Ophthalmology II :- Cataract is a major cause for blindness throughout the world and the Govt. of India has succeeded in controlling the same through activating Blindness Control Societies in District level in all States through out Bharath. Wayanad is a backward district without facilities for eye operations (or for any other major operation) and there for only a limited number of cataract patients got opportunities to go to cities for their eye operations. In the year 2003 we established relation with MS. COMTRUST Eye Care Society, Calicut and in association with them, regularly conduct screening camps for cataract in our hospital as well as in other rural and urban centers through out Wayanad. Confirmed patients were transported to Calicut for cataract operation by Ms.Comtrust Eye Hospital. During the last financial year 1,140 patients were screened and 72 patients were operated successfully and 627 tribal patients were provided with specs. All these services were provided free of cost to the tribal communities.
II Sickle Cell Disease:- Sickle Cell Disease is a dreadful disease in Wayanad which is in fact a genetic disorder. In alopathy, there is no cure for this disease and life expectancy for the patient is mostly limited to 40 years. We are providing treatment so that the patients can live up to this period without much suffering. We conduct Sickling tests regularly to identify new patients and 49 patients were accordingly identified last year. Total number of 719 patients are registered with us for whom we are providing treatment in (1) Sickle Cell Disease Diagnostic & Counselling center in our hospital and (2) Sickle Cell Counselling Center at Mananthavady. In view of the seriousness of the problem, we have established a separate institution by name SCARF (Sickle Cell Anemia Research Foundation) to affect the following:-
1. Free distribution of Hydroxy Urea (a life saving costly medicine) to 50 scd patients. 2. Conducting screening camps and education class in tribal colonies. 3. A Research project with Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala to find out a proper Ayurvedic Medicine for the treatment. 4. 3 rehabilitation centers for addressing socio economic problems of the patients.
5. Conferences: - A South India Conference on Sickle Cell Anemia Disease was conducted in February 2005 with the co operation of the All India Institute of Medical Science, New Delhi and the I.M.A., Wayanad. It was attended by doctors and social workers from Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, Sri. Bharathbhooshan, Health Secretary to the Government of Kerala, Sri.M.P.Veerendrakumar(M.P), District Medical Officer, Wayanad and Additional Dist. Magistrate, Wayanad.

4. Sub Centers.
Six sub centers of the Mission are functioning in the district, weekly in four places and monthly, in two. Laboratory facilities are provided in two centers and a daily primary care center in one.
5. Mobile Medical Unit
We have a full fledged Mobile Medical Unit and 656 Mobile Medical Camps were conducted in 2004-2005 benefiting the patients in 307 tribal colonies.

7. Swasthya Mitra Project.
Trained Health Workers visit tribal colonies and look after the health care of the people and guide them in conducting their lives in a clean, neat and hygienic way. They also distribute simple medicines. 101 Swasthya Mitras, (90 of them with first aid boxes) concentrate on the work in 150 colonies.
8. Aided Projects.
a) Grameena Vidya Kendras :- With the financial assistance from Tribal Integrated Development & Education Trust, Mumbai, thirty Ekal Vidyalayas are functioning for the benefit of students up to standard 7 and school drop outs. The average number benefited in each centre is 15.
b) Village libraries and reading rooms:- Five Village libraries cum reading rooms started during 2004-05 at Muttil and four sub centers are all functioning well. A total number of 1025 books and 25 journals are provided to them. An average number of 28 persons utilize the facilities in each center. A mobile library system also has been introduced in the Vidya Kendras, and there for 35 libraries are functioning as on now.
c) Vocational Training Centers :- For rehabilitating the patients of Sickle cell Anemia Disease who are unable to do hard work, a course of training in manufacturing house hold and fancy articles based on bamboo and reeds, centers were established at Muttil, Muthanga and Niravilpuzha with financial assistance of Rs. 15.15 Lakhs from the State Government. Ninety tribal youths have been trained in 2004-05 and another ninety (in three batches) are currently undergoing training with renewed financial assistance of Rs. 6.01 Lakhs.
Produces manufactured in the above centers are marketed in exhibition stalls in various locations in Kerala as well as in tourists’ spots, temple festivals and fairs etc. Two self help groups have been formed with the trained persons from our vocational training centers and formation a few more are in process.
9. Periodical Meetings and Refresher courses.
a) Hospital: - Monthly meetings of all staff members and volunteers of the hospital are conducted to keep up the spirit of selfless and effective work.
b) Swasthya Mitra: - Refresher classes are conducted as one day camps on Taluk basis every 3 months and three-day camps are conducted once in six months on district basis.
c) Teachers :- For the teachers of Grameen Vidyalayas, monthly one day camp and annual refresher course of 10 days are conducted.
10. Other Activities.
Monthly Deepa Pooja is conducted in the Dhanwanthari Mandir in our hospital where all the neighbors regularly participate for worshiping the Lord of health and Dhanwanthari Jayanthi is celebrated every year on Dhana trayodhashi.. Ramayana recitation programme in the month of Karkkidakam (July-August) and Raksha Bhandan are celebrated every year in about 50 locations in the ditrict. In connection with the Vivekananda Jayanthi celebrations, Dharma Jagaran Yatras are conducted by Sanyasins every year duly visiting the remote colonies in the district. They also conduct Satsang, Bhajans and benedictory speeches in tribal hamlets from 1st to 11th January and the programmes conclude with Vivekananda Jayanthi celebration in hospital premises on 12th January every year. We also conduct other celebrations such as Viswakarma Jayanthi in Vocational Training centers as well as Guru Poornima and Vijaya Dasami in the Vidya Kendras.
Bala Samskara Kendras:- Thirty Bala Samskara Kendras are working in different parts of the district with total attendance of 420 children. The centers are looked after by the Swasthya Mitras.
11 Visits.
Distinguished visitors to our hospital during 2004-05 included Mananeeya Mohanji Bhagavath - Sar Karyavah, Mananeeya Suresh Joshi - Saha Sar Karyavah, Mananeeya Prem Chandji Goyal - Akhil Bharatheeya Seva Pramukh, Hon: Chief Minister of Kerala Sri. Oomen Chandi, and the State Health Minister Sri. P.Ramachandran Master.
12. Income and Expenditure during 2004-05.
The total income during the year 2004-05 - Rs. 38,96,128.00
Total expenditure - Rs. 46,52,578.00
Liabilities - Rs. 6,56,540.00
Liabilities of Rs. 5, 56,450.00 has since been paid up during the first quarter of the current financial year.
13. During the current financial year we have submitted the account for Audit on quarterly basis and Auditors report has already been obtained for half year ended on 30th September 2005. Further, the Department of Tribal Affairs, Government of Kerala has conducted a verification of our accounts in detail in November 2005 and they are highly satisfied with the transparency maintained.
Managing Committee.
The term of office of the Managing committee is two years and a new committee of 15 members with Dr. P. Narayanan Nair, Mananthavady as president and Adv. Sri.K.A. Asokan, S.Bathery as Secretary has taken charge effective 1st April 2005.
14. Web - Site
Our web-site www.svmm.org was inaugurated by P.P. Sar Sangh Chalak Mananeeya Sudharshanji, when he visited Swami Vivekananda Medical Mission at Muttil in the year 2003. We request our well wishers to visit the site and to provide healthy suggestions and valuable advices so that we can improve the quality of our services.
Deyem Deena Janayacha Vitham, so said, the Saint Adi Sankara. There are many poor patients in very remote hilly regions of Wayanad, some times even without vehicular access and many of them suffer silently for want of attention. We are launching a project “Sponsor a Patient Yojana”, under which, the patients will be attended regularly by our health workers duly providing medicines and also food and clothing whenever required. This scheme is part of our Swasthya Mitra Project where the health workers visit the patients in Vanavasi hamlets regularly.
