1) Managing Committee:

      The managing committee with Dr. Narayanan Nair as President and Adv. K.A. Asokan as Secretary continued during the year and it met once every month. A General body meeting was held on 18th August 2007

2) The Hospital Project Continued with the following facilities:

3182 in patients and 57,401 out patients were treated during the year.

3) The Mobile Unit of the Mission with six sub centres in different parts of the District conducted 389 diagnostic and treatment camps in tribal colonies and Schools for tribal children treating 15,543 patients. The first sub centre at Chulliyode could be provided with a new building with the assistance of I.D.R.F. and this has enabled it to expand its services to the community.

5) Sickle Cell Anemia is a deadly genetic disorder found among some tribal Communities. Its presence among the tribal people of Wayanad was noticed by the Medical Officer of the Mission. It was confirmed by the experts of the Calicut Medical College and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. Instituted the Sickle Cell Anemia Control Programme with the Dist. Collector as Co-coordinator. It was found that the frequency of S.C. gene among different Tribe is very high - 7-40%. With the assistance of the AIIMS, nearly 80% of the Tribal population was screened. A separate Institution by name Sickle Cell Anemia Research Foundation (SCARF) was established to continue the campaign. The Sickle Cell Anemia Diagnostic and Counseling centre in the Mission Hospital at Muttil and the Sickle Cell Counseling centre at Mananathavadi are now continuing it to effect free distribution of Hydroxyl urea and conducts screening camps and education classes in tribal colonies. A research project with Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala to find out a Proper Ayurveda Medicine for the treatment is also in progress. A south India Conference on Sickle Anemia was organized in 2005 at Muttil, with the cooperation of the AIIMS and IMA, Wayanad. It was followed by a second one SED CON 07 in February 2007 with the assistance of IMA, Wayanad and KGMO, Wayanad which was attended by Dr. Graham R Sergeant of Jamaica, West Indies and Dr. S.L. Kate of Pune, Dr. Sukhesh Nair from CMC Vellore and Dr. G.P. Das of AIIMS, New Delhi.

 

6) With the help of the Comtrust Eye Care Society Calicut, screening camps for Cataract are conducted regularly in the Mission Hospital and other rural centres and confirmed patients are transported to Comtrust Eye Hospital , Calicut. All These services are provided free to the tribal brethren.

 

7) Swasthya Mithra Project of the Mission was initiated for training health workers to visit tribal colonies and look after the health care of the people and guide them in conducting their lives in a clean, neat and hygienic way. They also distribute             simple medicines. 98 such volunteers are now working in 148 colonies. Refresher       courses are arranged for them periodically.

 

8) Other Projects taken up by the Mission are the following.                                  

 

a) Grameena Vidya Kendras are conducted with the financial assistance from the Tribal Integrated Development and Education Trust, Mumbai. 50 Vidya Kendras are functioning in the District where children up to standard 7 and dropouts are brought in the evening and given tuition. A total number of 1240 children (570 boys and 670 girls) are attending. They are given light refreshments (Coffee and Biscuits) also. According to the teachers of the neighboring schools those attending the Kendras have improved their standards remarkably. The total number of Vidya Kendras will be 100 shortly.

    

b) Reading rooms and Libraries have been arranged in four of the Sub centers and all Vidya Kendras provide mobile library services.

    

c) Balasamskara Kendras have been organized in 65 localities. They meet once a week where the children are given instructions on right conduct, moral education, music and cultural activities. A total number of 1425 children are attending these Kendras.

 

d) Mother NGO. The Mission is working as Mother NGO for Wayanad District under the RCH Programme of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of the Govt. of India. The first phase of organizing FNGOS is over and further directions about the second phase are awaited.

    

e) AYUSH. The Mission has also taken up the AYUSH Project of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare a holistic approach of integrating the different systems of Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Sidha and Homeopathy. This includes awareness campaign in Sulthan Bathery Block of the District, Cultivation of Medicine Plants, Conducting Yoga classes in schools and separate Medical camps for Ayurveda and Homeopathy in the villages.

    

f) RNTCP. (Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme) The Mission continued its participation in this Programme as a Microscopy centre. T.B.Patients are examined and details are reported to the TB Unit of Govt. Hospital Kalpetta and the PHC nearest to the patients’ residence.

    

g) Pulse polio immunization programme is another scheme of the Govt. in which the Mission Hospital at Muttil is a center of activity.

    

h) CAPART. Under this project Self Help Groups of Tribal Women have been formed in 15 Colonies in four Panchayats, Nenmeni, Noolpuzha, Vellamunda and Thondernadu. Each group meets once a week to discuss ways to develop their savings habit and collect fixed amounts and invest in local banks. They also help in the working of Grameena Vidya Kendras.

 

9) Dhanwantari Mandir at the Hospital campus provides the patients and bystanders consolation and peace of mind and the workers with sustained devotion to the service they are engaged in.

10) Accounts The accounts of the Mission are subjected to Quarterly Audit. For its finances the Mission depends on donations from philanthropic well wishers and Institutions in addition to the Grants from the Government. Donations are exempted from Income Tax under section 80 G of the IT Act.
