APPEAL Dear friends, In order to serve our Motherland and to inculcate in the people a spirit and sense of social responsibility, sacrifice and devotion to the cause of national and social uplift of the neglected and exploited brethren in backward, rural and tribal areas, rendering them medical and other social aids, Swami Vivekananda Medical Mission, Kerala was started in 1972. Swami Vivekananda said, “ I have gone all over India and seen with my own eyes, the ignorance, misery and squalor of our people. My whole soul is afired and I am burning with the desire to change our conditions. To reach Narayana, we must serve Daridra Narayana, the starving millions of India. “.................” I wish and pray for the relief and uplift of those who are suffering and miserable. Let all be happy, let all be healthy, let not a single soul suffer the pangs of misery. The hope lies within you. Have faith in the Lord. Feel for the miserable and look up for help, and it shall come.” And in this spirit Swami Vivekananda Medical Mission is functioning for the welfare of the vanavasi brethren.
Vanavasis of Wayanad: The tribal population of Wayanad is about 25% of the whole, i.e. nearly 1,50,000. They come under about 18 denominations, prominent among them being Kurumar, Kuruchiyar, Paniyar, Adiyar etc.. Each community has its own culture and has strong faith in it. Their main occupation is agricultural labour. Literacy is very low among them and superstitions are prevalent. They live in hamlets where faciliities for drinking water, approach roads; sanitary latrines etc. are not available. Malnutrition, unhygienic habits and unsanitary conditions of living are the main causes of diseases among them. Others are exploiting them because of their poverty and ignorance.
Beginning: Moved by the plight of our vanavasi and girivasi brethren of Wayanad, a dispensary was started at Muttil, near Kalpetta. It has now grown into a well-equipped hospital through sustained efforts of dedicated workers equally supported by our philanthropic well-wishers. --- We look forward for support and cooperation from philanthropic and benevolent persons, institution and Trusts in continuing and furthering our activities for amelioration of the misery of the poor and neglected section of our society. In conclusion we request your active participation in this noble cause in any of the following ways viz..
